Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 851 AM EDT Sat Sep 20 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure slides across northern New England today through Sunday providing fair weather and cold conditions tonight. High pressure moves offshore Monday with increasing temperatures into Tuesday. Moisture will also increase into the region Tuesday through mid week that will bring chances for some showers.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/... 845am Update...Expired last night`s frost/freeze headlines little/no change in today`s forecast.

Previous Discussion... Nighttime microphysics satellite imagery early this Saturday morning shows clear skies over the region with sfc high pressure located over Quebec. These clear skies and low dew points are as expected allowing for strong radiational cooling conditions. Some sites are experiencing some intermittent mixing though, which is resulting in some swings in temperatures. Current readings range from around the freezing mark across the northern valleys with upper 30s/lower 40s in most other locations. The exception is along the coast and in the urban corridors where temperatures are still into the 50s. Additional cooling can be expected through sunrise with the current frost/freeze headlines remaining in effect.

High pressure will remain in control today, allowing for a sunny day with near seasonable high temperatures into the 60s to near 70 degrees from north to south. Despite weak winds, low afternoon RH will introduce additional fire wx concerns with additional details in the fire section below.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/... Sfc high pressure will crest over New England tonight, likely allowing for an even colder night with clear skies prevailing. Forecast low temperatures range from the middle 20s across the northern valleys with lower to middle 30s in most other locations away from the coast and outside of the urban corridors. In collaboration with neighboring WFOs, went ahead and issued freeze warnings across northern NH and the western ME mtns and foothills with frost advisories elsewhere away from the coast and outside of the urban corridor of southern NH. Valley fog will be possible late due to the air/water temperature gradient.

High pressure will begin to slowly drift east of the area on Sunday, allowing for developing southerly flow. This will allow highs to reach the lower 70s in most locations with partly to mostly sunny skies.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/... 01Z NBM Update...No significant changes with the latest NBM. High pressure moves offshore early next week allowing temperatures to moderate into Tuesday. Poorly organized troughing then moves into the Northeast Tuesday through Thursday with PoPs remaining largely the same as the previous run of the NBM around 40 percent.

Previously...

High pressure begins to slide east of the area Sunday night. Some low level moisture advection could bring some lower clouds or fog in overnight. The gentle breeze and chance of more clouds will reduce time of good cooling, and not expecting as cold temps Sunday night. Some patch frost may be possible in the valleys in northern NH and mtns of western ME.

Dry weather continues Monday, but increase of clouds should be apparent. Low pressure lifting north of the Great Lakes will bring a warm front into the Northeast Monday and Monday night. NE translation of the system means the slow arrival of deeper moisture for the chance of showers, after sunset.

Broad area of unsettled weather will then cross Tuesday and Wednesday. Main message here is on and off showers, with one or two periods of rainfall possible in the forecast area. Global models are still very much at odds of a more accurate depiction. The lack of a more defined synoptic feature reduces predictability as far as timing and amounts. But given PWATs and lack of sharper forcing features, the likelihood of much more than a quarter-inch of precipitation in any one remains below 40%.

This round of precipitation will be the last before another round of dry conditions late week as a cold front passes and low-RH air again takes residence in northern New England.

&&

.AVIATION /13Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Short Term...Other than valley FG again late tonight into early Sunday morning, VFR conditions will persist with generally light and variable flow today into tonight before becoming southerly on Sunday. No LLWS is anticipated through the period.

Long Term...Return flow around a departing high may bring low clouds or fog supporting IFR Sunday night. This should lift slightly into the day Monday, but patchy MVFR still possible. Additional restrictions are possible into midweek with SHRA moving into the region through Wednesday.

&&

.MARINE... Short Term...High pressure will allow for continued light winds and low seas through this weekend.

Long Term...High pressure moves into the Gulf of Maine Sunday night. An increase in low clouds will be possible, potentially reducing vis into Monday morning. Unsettled weather arriving from the west into midweek will tend to shift southerly winds NE. Wave heights increase from 1-3 to 4-6 ft by Tuesday afternoon.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER... Today will be less breezy but much drier as an Arctic originating airmass builds into the region. Relative humidity values are expected to drop into the 20-30 percent range which, despite light winds, will continue elevated fire weather concerns, especially if fuels are readily available. The next chance for measurable rainfall arrives Monday night through Wednesday, but forecast amounts remain light.
