White Shield was founded in 1954 to replace the town of Elbowoods (Arikara: hiswíkAt ([hisˈwikə̥t]), which was inundated by the creation of Lake Sakakawea. The name honors White Shield, an Arikara chief and a scout for General George Armstrong Custer.
