.DISCUSSION...

Generally fair weather prevails today with mostly sunny skies and light winds. A few showers and/or a stray thunderstorm over Mono and Mineral counties are the exception this afternoon. This is a result of the upper low that has descended towards the SoCal/Vegas/western AZ area and allowing a transient upper high pressure area to move in. The closeness of the low to the southern portions of our region leads to those showers as there is marginal instability and some residual moisture. However, chances are low below 10%. Tomorrow, those chances expand to 10-30% mainly for the Eastern Sierra and areas south of US-50 as the Mono/Mineral area and vicinity end under the deformation zone due to the approach of the next upper trough providing extra lift from the diffluence aloft.

Widespread active weather returns on Sunday and through much of next week. A broad longwave upper level trough descends from the Gulf of Alaska between Sunday and Monday. The storm track will remain over the region allowing at least two shortwaves passing through by mid-week with the main cold front on Monday night into Tuesday morning. There is potential for a third shortwave right before the end of the work week, but models start to diverge by this time, bringing more uncertainty.

Winds will start to increase on Sunday afternoon, especially over mountain ridges and areas north of I-80. Then on Monday and Tuesday we are expecting gusty winds areawide with gusts in the 30-40 mph range with a 60-90% chance of exceeding 30 mph both days. Winds decrease by Wednesday. Periods of showers and isolated thunderstorms are likely through Wednesday, especially over the Sierra, where we have the best chances for precipitation. It is also important to note that temperatures will be decreasing through mid-week with Tuesday being the coldest day of the week. Thus, snow levels come down from 12 kft to 9-10 kft by Tuesday morning. So, the highest peaks may see some snow, how much, is still tbd, but looking at light amounts below an inch per the ensemble members of the GFS/ECMWF. Cooler temperatures also prevail next week as previously stated with afternoon highs 5 to 20 degrees below average Mon-Wed. A slight warm up starts on Wednesday, but the region remains around 5 degrees below average by the end of the week.
