.DISCUSSION...

Low-level water vapor imagery shows the first band of moisture pushing into the Sierra this afternoon with isolated showers on the west side of the Sierra crest north of the Tahoe Basin already. As that moisture builds in, expect cloud cover to increase. A second band is just now off the coast of northern California and is expected to move into the area by late this afternoon into the early evening hours. Light showers today will be confined to the Sierra and the Sierra Front, primarily in and around the Tahoe Basin. Expect similar conditions Wednesday in terms of showers with light accumulations (up to 0.1").

Those two bands of showers will bring increased wind gusts this afternoon. Expect gusts up to 40 mph for much of the area. Additionally, recreation and travel impacts are expected with choppy lake conditions and bumpy flights.

Afternoon highs remain below normal through much of this week with highs in the mid 70s and low to mid 60s for valleys and higher elevations, respectively. As of now, Friday looks to be the coolest day of the week, possibly bordering on "chilly," with a current high of 64 in Reno. Sierra communities can expect to drop into the mid 50s Friday. As such, overnight lows are dropping, with more Sierra communities seeing lows flirting with freezing by this weekend. Speaking of freezing, snow levels will remain around 9500 ft through the rest of today; cameras up near Mammoth have been showing some flying snowflakes today!

The low pressure system that is bringing in the aforementioned moisture is spinning off the coast of the Pacific NW. As the week progresses, that low will move further south and inland into northern California by Thursday. This has thus increased the chances and areal coverage for showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday with a 30-60% chance areawide. Saturday and beyond, we look to stay cool but expect drier conditions.

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions expected through much of this week except where brief, heavy showers may drop CIGS/VIS to MVFR briefly, primarily for KTRK/KTVL today and tomorrow. Showers may also bring mountain obscurations. Otherwise, expect gusts up to 30 kts today for both Sierra and Sierra Front terminals.

With increased wind gusts, pockets of mountain wave turbulence and LLWS will be possible, primarily for Sierra Front terminals.
