.DISCUSSION... Issued at 355 PM CDT Thu Sep 25 2025

Tonight and Friday...

Gorgeous early fall weather has settled into the region today, and expect that to remain the norm (and not the exception) through the next 7-10 days. High pressure is in control - both surface and aloft - which is helping to keep winds light and skies mostly clear. Clear and calm conditions will continue overnight with lows upper 40s far W, to 50s elsewhere.

Friday has trended a bit warmer, and drier, over the past 24 hours ahead of our next cold front. Given the trends today of "overachieving" temps and "underachieving" dew points, this seems quite reasonable. Getting to the time of year where evapotranspiration from crops/vegetation is rapidly waning and any sort of combination of full insolation and non-easterly component of wind can really help to dry out the boundary layer. As such, have bumped up highs a couple deg for Friday to WIDESPREAD mid 80s, and wouldn`t rule out a few spots approaching 90F. With the drier air, however, should see a quick decline in temps for Friday evening football games. Winds will be more noticeable on Friday out of the south, but even gusts should remain mainly less than 20 MPH.

Now if only the bug/insect situation could be as pleasant as the weather! :/

Friday night through Saturday night...

An upper level trough will extend from Canada into the northern Plains and upper Midwest Friday night. Winds across south central and central Nebraska and north central Kansas will be out of the south until a cold front begins pushing into the area late Friday night into Saturday morning. Low temperatures Friday night will be in the mid to upper 50s. A surface high pressure will move across the area on Saturday in the wake of the cold front. Winds on Saturday will become more easterly by evening as the surface high moves just to the east of the area. The front will not bring a significant decrease in temperatures with highs in the mid 70s to low/mid 80s on Saturday. The surface high will move eastward Saturday night with winds across south central and central Nebraska and north central Kansas becoming more southerly. Temperatures will drop into the upper 40s to upper 50s Saturday night with clear skies.

Sunday through Wednesday night...

An upper ridge will extend from southern Texas to the Midwest on Sunday with Nebraska and Kansas on the backside of this ridge. Winds across south central and central Nebraska and north central Kansas will increase out of the south Sunday afternoon as a surface trough strengthens to the west of the area. These conditions will contribute to temperatures warming up into the low to mid 80s Sunday afternoon. Warmer temperatures will continue across the area Sunday night with lows in the low to mid 60s. Southerly winds continue on Monday with an upper trough approaching from the west. High temperatures on Monday will again be in the 80s but will be a little cooler than the previous day. The upper trough will move over the area Monday night and may (less than 10% chance) produce some scattered rain showers. Low temperatures Monday night will be similar to those from the previous night. High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will be similar to those on Monday with southerly winds continuing. Low temperatures Tuesday night and Wednesday night will be in the mid 50s to low 60s.
