Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 126 PM EDT Thu Sep 11 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure will maintain dry conditions through the end of the week with warm sunny days and cool nights with patchy frost across the north. A weak system slides southeast out of Canada Saturday night and Sunday bring slight chances for showers while widespread wetting rainfall is unlikely. High pressure returns Monday and will remain in control through the middle of next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Winds briefly pick up the rest of today with gusts up to 20 mph possible at times as a cold front moves through. This front will bring some increase in clouds with it, but the atmosphere is too dry aloft for any precipitation.

Winds diminish through tonight with skies becoming mostly clear as Canadian high pressure starts to build overhead. Conditions look good for radiational cooling, especially across the north where temperatures are expected to drop into the 30s with frost in many sheltered locations. The rest of the area should again see lows in the 40s, but there may be enough of a breeze to keep some locations across the south and the coast closer to 50 degrees. Valley fog is again likely in northern valleys and along the CT River.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/... High pressure further expands into New England on Friday and Friday night. Once morning valley fog burns off, plenty of sunshine is expected with light winds and temperatures in the 70-75F range across the region. Friday night will be another cool tonight with valley fog in some areas, but mid and high clouds may also hinder full cooling potential, depending on how quickly it moves in. Lows will be mostly in the 40s, but upper 30s are possible in some northern valleys.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... The upper jet will largely remain north across Canada through the long term period resulting in slow moving and poorly organized mid level features over the CONUS. A splitting trough will cross Quebec this weekend that will bring slight chances for showers Saturday night into Sunday. Surface high pressure then builds in Monday and likely keeps the forecast area dry through the middle of next week.

There will be more in the way of clouds Saturday as a trough moving across Quebec will advect moisture into northern New England. During the day the forecast area will likely remain precipitation free with highs ranging from the upper 60s across the north to the mid 70s across the south. Chances for showers will increase Saturday night into Sunday. Forcing will be weak with the splitting trough so appreciable rain is not expected with PoPs topping out at 20 percent. Highs on Sunday will generally be in the 70s.

High pressure builds in from the northwest Monday and will generally hold over the Northeast through Wednesday. This will allow for warm sunny days and cool nights. An upper low over the Southeast will drift northward the second half of the week and may spread moisture into the region while there is little to no signal for a widespread wetting rain on the horizon.

&&

.AVIATION /17Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Short Term...Prevailing VFR, except valley fog is again likely at HIE and LEB tonight and Friday night. North to northwest winds increase behind a dry cold front this afternoon and evening with gusts 15-20 kt at times. Winds then diminish through tonight and continue to be light Friday and Friday night as high pressure builds in. Coastal sites will likely see winds shift to onshore Friday afternoon with the seabreeze.

Long Term...Mainly VFR through the period. The exception will be the potential for nighttime valley fog most nights that could bring restrictions to KLEB and KHIE.

&&

.MARINE... Short Term...A dry cold front crosses the waters this afternoon and evening. SCA conditions are not expected, but a period of N/NNE wind gusts of 20 to 25 kt is possible this evening through tonight. High pressure builds overhead Friday into Friday night, keeping winds and seas below SCA levels.

Long Term...Winds and seas will remain below SCA thresholds. A weak system crossing southeast Canada will bring an increase in south to southwest flow Saturday afternoon into Sunday while gusts will only top out around 20 kts.
