.DISCUSSION...
KEY MESSAGES:
- Gusty NW winds continue today behind a cold front with a Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Fort Peck Lake.
- Warming trend begins soon after, with the warmest days being Sunday and Monday. Then more cooling starts Tuesday.
- Models are pointing towards some precipitation chances starting Tuesday night and continuing for a few days.
WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:
A shortwave trough from the Canadian Rockies this morning has brought gusty winds and cooler temperatures to our region. As a result, the ridge of high pressure will be temporarily flattened or moved southward. This NE Montana cold front has moved through the area and widespread sustained NW winds of 25 to 30 mph and some gusts in excess of 45 mph have been observed across most of the area. The Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect for Fort Peck Lake today until 6 pm. Winds will quickly diminish to near calm by sunset this evening.
Later on Saturday, the ridge ridge of high pressure rebounds northward supporting calm winds and above normal temperatures through early next week.
Beginning Tuesday, the weather pattern becomes more active and unstable with SW flow aloft and Pacific moisture combining with short wave disturbances riding up and over the Rocky Mountains. Initially on Tuesday, most of the rainfall will be focused over the higher elevations of the Rockies, but as the low pressure continues moving eastward by Tuesday evening, some scattered light rain showers can be expected for parts of eastern Montana as well, continuing through Wednesday.
Models fall out of line with each other later next week, lowering confidence for any chances for rain until we see more model consistency and alignment. FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:
Increased winds with a mix of hi-res models to better represent this cool front today.
Confidence in temperature forecast is high.
Confidence in rain forecast chances next week is average to below average
