.SYNOPSIS... Typical fall conditions will continue across much of the area. Several weak systems will approach the interior over the weekend bringing spotty light precipitation, mainly to the eastern interior. A slightly stronger system will follow early next week with the potential for more widespread interior rainfall along with snow throughout the Alaska Range. In addition an arctic front will drop into northern Alaska early next week with mainly light snow showers but noticeably colder and breezy conditions for the North Slope and West Coast.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION... The state of Alaska remains under the influence of broad troughing aloft as we head into the weekend. This includes three separate upper lows as of this afternoon. One is over the Gulf while the other two are over the Bering and Beaufort respectively. As the low over the Gulf weakens and departs eastward, it will send a weakening front north and into the interior over the weekend. This will bring scattered (mainly light) bouts of precipitation to the Alaska Range and parts of the interior for Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile the Arctic low over the Beaufort will manage to keep onshore flow going across the Arctic coastline resulting in drizzle, fog, and light snow showers the next several days.

Early next week will see the Arctic low strengthen and send an arctic front southward across the north slope and west coast resulting in noticeably colder temperatures in these areas and allowing for some of that arctic chill to seep into parts of the interior as well. Meanwhile the Bering low will be taking up residence in the Gulf to start next week and will send a stronger warm front north over the Alaska Range. This will bring better rain chances to much of the interior with higher elevations seeing snowfall. The higher terrain of the White mountains may well see a few inches of snow early next week while the Parks highway through the Alaska Range could also be impacted as rain changes over to snow down there as well.

.HYDROLOGY... No concerns at this time.

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7... (same as previous discussion) High confidence in an arctic trough bringing light snow to the North Slope and Brooks Range, along with colder temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday. Persistent onshore flow should keep chances for rain and snow showers through the end of next week. The West Coast should remain quiet but chilly as the arctic trough brings colder temperatures with highs in the 40s. In the Central and Eastern Interior, expect a cooler pattern as the arctic trough drops south. Models are in good agreement that it will interact with moisture from Gulf of Alaska, and this should bring a decent chance for rain showers in the valleys and snow showers in the higher terrain of the Interior/Alaska Range Tuesday and Wednesday.

Towards the end of the week, there is a hint of a much stronger arctic trough approaching from the northwest. Depending on the track of this low, it could bring much colder temperatures (20s and 30s) to much of Northern Alaska along with the Interior`s first real chance for snow. However, this is highly uncertain, the trough could dig south in the Bering and whiff Northern Alaska, or stay north over the Beaufort Sea, time will tell but this is something being monitored.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None
